HANOI, July 1 Asia Pulse - The Vietnamese government is encouraging the development of high-quality plywood as an ecologically-sustainable material for furniture as part of efforts to plug the gap in supply and demand.
The Vietnam Forestry Corporation hopes plywood and other composite materials will help the country meet its demand for 9.4 million cu.m of wood in 2005.
The corporation plans to build plywood factories near plantation forests, to turn out 200,000cu.m by 2005 and 1 million cu.m by the end of the decade.
Traditional sources of wood have been extensively logged for years and obsolete technology used to process natural timber causes waste.
Only half the volume of trees logged are actually used for timber. It takes 3cu.m of timber to make just 1cu.m of processed finished product. Plywood furniture is growing in popularity.
Hanoi's Ham Long, Le Duan, Doi Can and De La Thanh streets are magnets for shoppers hunting down a furniture bargain.
Nha Xinh Supermarket sells a lot of plywood and fibreboard furniture, even though most of its offerings are more expensive ...
