WASHINGTON, July 1 Asia Pulse - Stressing the importance of good communication, Richard Bush, the outgoing chairman and managing director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), said on Friday that he expects relations between the United States and Taiwan to continue to improve.
Bush said that the importance of communication between the two sides is "the major lesson" that he has learned during his near five-year term.
"When we both work hard to maintain good channels of communication, to talk clearly and frankly with each other, to ensure that neither side surprises the other, then our relationship is going to be on a very sound footing," he told reporters.
He is "very pleased" with the state of the relationship and with the fact that both the Bush administration and Taiwan have taken steps to improve it.
Quoting Secretary of State Colin Powell's recent remarks about Taiwan being "a success story" rather than "a problem", Bush said the Unites States should interact with the island on that basis.
Looking to the future, Bush said that he expects the two countries to face challenges.
"But based on our common values, shared interests and good communication," he said, "we'll meet them just fine and our relations will continue to improve."
