On May 25th, The Spectator of London reported the harrowing saga of a 70-year-old Lusaka, Zambia, resident, identified only as "Robert," and his family. Earlier this year, three thugs broke into Robert's home (a farm deep in the Zambian bush), tied him up, placed the barrel of his own .22 rifle against his head, and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened, however, since they did not know how to cock the gun. They then locked Robert's wife in a bedroom while two of the intruders took a daughter outside to rape her. The young woman had been trained in karate, however, and succeeded in disabling them with a few well-placed kicks. As described by The Spectator reporter Hugh Russell, "Then one of them found some money and they ran -- or, in the case of the two would-be rapists, limped -- away." They also took Robert's rifle, but it was later recovered after he offered a reward. Thereafter, he kept it loaded by his bed.
About four weeks later, another trio (believed to be the same men) shot their way through the front door of Robert's residence with an AK-47 rifle that they knew how to use. As described by Russell, "They marched into the living-room, firing into the ceiling. Then they ransacked the place. They passed through it with bundles of burning paper, torn from Robert's magazines, tied to poles. They shouted and screamed Robert's name and, in due course, they found their way to his locked bedroom door."
By then, Robert's wife, daughter, and granddaughter had scurried into an adjoining bathroom, where they hid in the tub. Robert sat on the bed, his rifle in hand, until one of the intruders called his name. When he asked what they wanted, the man replied: "We want you."
