On February 11th in Topeka, Kansas, James Collins, 33, went to the home of ex-girlfriend Christine Hockman, 34, to take their four-year-old son for visitation. An argument ensued and police were called as they had been on numerous earlier occasions. Investigating officers confiscated a non-functioning firearm from Collins' vehicle, but didn't arrest him.

Shortly before 9 a.m. the next morning, Collins returned and barged into Hock-man's home through the back door. The couple's son, and Braulio DiazCastro, 24 (identified in news accounts as Hockman's boyfriend) were in the living room at the time.
