Faced with mounting pressure from Wall Street and investors, Qwest Communications International Inc. made changes to its leadership last week and reiterated plans to divest its wireless business as a way for the telecommunications provider to cut its enormous debt load and regain investor confidence.
Qwest announced Joseph Nacchio had stepped down as the company's chairman and chief executive officer and was replaced by long-time telecom executive Richard Notebaert. Notebaert was chairman and CEO of Ameritech Corp. until it merged with SBC Communications in 1999 and most recently was president and CEO of Tellabs Inc.
