OVERVIEW:
With individual consumption remaining low in Japan, business conditions for domestic retailers remain harsh. Some retailers, however, have succeeded in strengthening their financial standings by taking advantage of a few positive factors available.
The bankruptcy of supermarket operator Mycal Corp. in September 2001 was a positive factor for its competitors. Ito-Yokado Co., for example, has seen customer traffic at its supermarkets increase since last September.
Intense competition among retailers to open new outlets has taken a breather following the introduction of the large-scale retail store location law in June 2000, another positive factor. In addition, since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S., many Japanese have refrained from traveling abroad, encouraging them to spend more on cosmetics...
