CONTRARY TO OUR imagined reputation for hell-raising, we Aussies are natural bureaucrats. Put three of us together, and we have a president, a secretary and a treasurer in no time. The president is usually the most gregarious, and sees herself making speeches; the secretary thinks "writing the minutes won't be too much trouble" and whoever is left over becomes treasurer.
No one ever wants to be treasurer. Even in government, where ministerial posts are everything, being treasurer is considered the hardest job, tolerated by the ambitious only as a stepping-stone to the sunny uplands of the prime ministership.
I had never even thought of being treasurer ...
