ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO the University of Adelaide circulated the university's new strategic plan with much fanfare and hype. Its mission statement boldly announced that by the year 2022 the university would be recognised as one of the top twenty-five universities in the world.
The document made every academic I spoke to cringe with embarrassment.
