SIR: "You'd have to be a bit of a dill" to appreciate my essay on Australian speech (January-February 2002), writes Suzanne Baker (Letters, March). This is the approved television method of dealing with language items--throw around a lot of "strewths" and "drongoes" in a jolly tone and hope no one notices you haven't done the job.
Baker jnr then goes on to outline Sidney J. Baker's A3 theory on Australian accents, despite the fact that he wrote nothing on regional speech and presumably thought that in Adelaide "Rose Royce" was a serial mistress--if he ever went to Adelaide.
