WHILE IT IS NOW certain that the use of embryonic stem cells in Australian medical research will go ahead, and clearly the majority of the community endorses this decision, the issue is not as morally clear cut as most of the advocates of the experimentation like to think. There has been a worrying lack of concern about the genuine ethical considerations involved in the cannibalisation of living human tissues for medical purposes, doubly surprising because of the superstitious and fearful responses to the much less problematic consumption of genetically modified foodstuffs. Scare-mongering is a very selective sport these days.
