Photorealistic rendering and character animation are two of the main features that have been added to Version 2 of Carrara, the low-cost 3D modeling and animation product from Eovia. (Carrara was originally developed by MetaCreations, and is in fact partly based on two of that company's programs at the time: Ray Dream Studio and Infini-D.)
Eovia is pushing hard to promote Carrara to graphics, Web, and multimedia designers as a low cost alternative to higher end products such as Alias|Wavefront's Maya, Discreet's 3ds max, NewTek's LightWave, or Maxon Computer's Cinema 4D.
