HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker today announced five appointments to top leadership positions in the state Department of Labor and Industry. All appointments are effective immediately.
"It is my pleasure to welcome these individuals to their new positions," Gov. Schweiker said. "Each of them has proven experience, expertise and competence to handle their new duties.
"Pennsylvania has experienced many successes under this Administration. However, there is still more to be done for the working families of the Commonwealth. I am confident this new leadership team, headed by Secretary Johnny Butler, will continue the great work we've come to expect from L&I."
Secretary Butler added, "Labor and Industry plays a key role in the economic strategy that the Governor has laid out for Pennsylvania. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with these new leaders, and I am confident they will hit the ground running and contribute greatly to Labor and Industry's record of accomplishments."
The five new appointments are:
-- Robert Eugene Giles of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, as executive deputy
secretary, where he will perform key management and administrative
duties for L&I Secretary Butler. Giles formerly was executive
assistant to the secretary of the Department of Community and
Economic Development. He also worked as an aide in the White House
and for the AEGIS Group for AMP Inc. He was a Harrisburg city
councilman in 1981;
-- Alan R. Williamson of Lewisberry, York County, as deputy secretary for
Administration. Williamson was formerly L&I's deputy secretary for
Unemployment Compensation Programs. He also worked with the
