A veteran of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys and, as leader of the Sunny Mountain Boys, a nurturer of such world-class talents as banjoist J. D. Crowe and mandolinist Paul Williams, Jimmy Martin's place in bluegrass history is assured. Yet he has never gotten the respect he deserves; a notoriously irascible personality and a marked predilection for novelty tunes have kept him on the periphery of the mainstream. This is unfortunate. His voice is as piercingly perfect as any in bluegrass, and his rhythm guitar technique is unparalleled--the celebrated "G run" that punctuates the end of so many phrases in bluegrass songs was probably his invention.
