Fred Frith did not pioneer either the idea of "preparing" a guitar (in the way that John Cage "prepared" pianos) or the approach that involves placing several guitars on a table and drawing unlikely, otherworldly, and even frankly bizarre noises from them. It could be argued, however, that he has developed both approaches more fully than anyone else, and few would dispute the singular importance of his solo guitar recordings in the history of the British (and American) avant-garde scene.
