Music Librarian Elizabeth Olmsted passed away on 19 November 2001 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she had resided with her daughter's family since January. Born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1919, Olmsted was 82 at the time of her death. After receiving her B.M. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music in 1940, she went on to receive an M.A. in music and a B.S. in library science from the University of Minnesota in 1945 and 1951. A Post-Master's Certificate in Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland was conferred in 1968.
Olmsted served as head music librarian at Ohio State University from 1954 to 1958 after which she assumed the position of head of the Oberlin Conservatory Library, a position she held from 1958 to 1974. In this role, she oversaw the completion of the new Mary H. Vial Conservatory of Music Library and is credited with fostering an impressive growth in the conservatory's music collection.
