* Glove-compartment organizer used as premium for CONSUMER REPORTS
Contains a flashlight that could overheat and cause minor burns, and a tire-pressure gauge that may give inaccurate readings.
Products: Glove-compartment organizers, imported by Astra International of New York, N.Y. Mailed in a white cardboard box with "Made in China" and the number 4238 printed on it, the kit consists of a black-cloth-covered case containing a flashlight, tire-pressure gauge, pocketknife, pen, and pad of paper. CONSUMER REPORTS magazine, published by Consumers Union (CU), sent this premium to some 15,000 new subscribers between October 2001 and April 2002. CU's tests of the tire-pressure gauge found that several samples gave inaccurate readings. Tests also found that the flashlight could overheat in limited cases.
What to do: Consumers who received this kit as a premium with a new subscription to CONSUMER REPORTS magazine will be receiving a notice by mail that includes a postage-paid label and a postage-paid return letter. CU will send affected consumers two free books as a replacement for the premium. Those who return the flashlight and gauge to CU (using the label) or state that they have discarded the products (sending back the letter) will also have their magazine subscription extended for six months free of charge. For more information, contact CU at 888-471-8860 between 9:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.
