No-spill gas containers can make filling lawn mowers and other gas-powered equipment a little less messy. California requires the no-spill containers to reduce pollution from spills and fumes. Some containers have automatic shutoff valves that stop the fuel flow when the level in the gas tank reaches the tip of the nozzle. With others, you push a button to control the flow rate.
We tested models by four manufacturers, using them to fill more than three dozen mowers, string trimmers, chain saws, and power blowers. No model was the best in every situation. But two could serve you very well, depending on your needs. TOP CHOICES The Briggs & Stratton Smart Fill Fuel Can, $21 (www.briggsand stratton.com),holds 21/2 gallons, and has an automatic shutoff and a screw-on spout assembly. (The spout is designed for the supplied can; it didn't fit other gas cans that we tried.) Pros: It didn't spill, and its two handles make pouring a breeze. Cons: The 118-inch spout is too wide or long for some small handheld power equipment. Also, its slow flow rate (1 gallon per minute) could be tedious for big gas tanks on, say, a riding mower. (A regular can has a flow rate of about 5 gallons per minute.)
