With the arrival of Quorn in the frozen-food section of natural-food stores and some supermarkets, consumers can sample a brand of meat substitute that claims to have more of the texture and look of meat than other meat alternatives. It has been sold in Europe for years.
Despite its name, Quorn is not made from corn. And despite what the packages say, it is not "mushroom in origin," either. Found naturally in soil, it is a fungus that is grown and fermented in vats, mixed with egg whites and other ingredients, then quick-frozen. It is not genetically modified.
Our taste testers evaluated Quorn Nuggets, Tenders, and Grounds; each package cost $3.80 for about four servings. The chicken-style breaded Nuggets might pass for the real thing.
