August 19, 1944 was the first publication date of Candy Industry, "the newspaper of confectionery business" to be published every other Saturday. The publication's mandate was to provide a platform for the industry--a simple one. Don Gussow the founder, editor and publisher stated that Candy Industry would be "modern and in keeping with today's and tomorrow's thinking and will promote the welfare of our industry energetically."

Gussow also decided that the publication would establish the "Candy Industry Man of the Year Award," singling out one person as worthy of "The Kettle." The award would be symbolic of diverse accomplishments on behalf of the candy business and a token recognition of the contribution for the "great or good" of the industry ...
