Nov. 10--Paul Sutherland has lived something of a "Rodeo" life.
Sutherland was 18 and on his way to a career in the military when he happened to attend a performance of Agnes de Mille's classic ballet, "Rodeo." That experience convinced Sutherland to trade in his Army boots for dancing shoes.
The first ballet he ever danced also was "Rodeo," a work he would perform numerous times in a career that included stints in such companies as American Ballet Theater, the Joffrey Ballet and the Harkness Ballet.
Now, Sutherland is one of the few people entrusted with the task of setting "Rodeo" on other companies, such as Tulsa Ballet.
"Rodeo" is part of Tulsa Ballet's "Celebrate Oklahoma!" triple-bill, which is being presented as part of the Oklahoma Centennial Celebration kickoff week in Tulsa.
