One night in late spring, I sat with the photographer, writer, and artist Peter Beard at a dinner for Lee Radziwill. I'd known
both Beard and Radziwill since the seventies. My first knowledge of the dashing lensman, I recall, came in the long-ago year of 1972, in the form of a wonderful photograph he took of the model Naomi Sims, in a bikini and a white slice of ivory by Elsa Peretti, astride a crocodile.
At the table, Peter mentioned that his beautiful daughter, Zara Beard, a senior at Nightingale-Bamford, needed a dress for her upcoming debut at the International Crillon Ball in Paris in November.
