Joanne Smith, NCTM, of Bonita Springs, Florida, is the 2002 Music Teachers National Association Teacher of the Year. She accepted the honor at the MTNA National Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. As the award recipient, her conference expenses were sponsored by MTNA.
Joanne's love of music and joy in developing talent ill young people led her to a lifelong teaching career and presented her with opportunities to hold performances, workshops and master classes throughout the United States. She attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin and obtained a performance degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
She was appointed assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy at the University of Michigan, where she founded the MTNA/Michigan MTA Collegiate Chapter, directed the Division of Keyboard Studies, designed and implemented both master's and doctoral degree programs in piano pedagogy and performance, Founded the piano pedagogy laboratory program, and developed the Piano Pedagogy Resource Center Library.
