On January 16th, Brian Mangum, 31. of Salt Lake City, Utah, was at a local car wash when he noticed something with a silver hue protruding from a nearby garbage can. His interest piqued, he took a closer look and found a small unlocked box containing a number of mostly empty hanging file folders. One, however, held a bundle of bills wrapped with a paper band from the Stateline Casino in Wendover, Nevada, more than 110 miles west of Salt Lake City. The stash totaled $3,000.

Mangum took the cash home and readily admits being tempted to keep it. Indeed, he and his wife began making a list of things they could do with it, but then, as he told Salt Lake television station KSL for a report broadcast on April 16th, "we just looked at each other and I told her, 'I don't know why we're doing this. There's no decision, really, to be made. It's not our money.'" Salt Lake's Deseret News that day further quoted him as saying, "I couldn't have lived with myself if I had kept it. It wasn't a hard decision to make."
