The Protege offers a roomy interior that's well put together, but newer competitors have matched it in this area. Handling is good, but a stiff ride and noisy cabin detract from the driving experience. Reliability has been outstanding, however.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
Even on smooth surfaces the ride is stiff and choppy, and the constant jittery motions are fatiguing over time. Pronounced wind and road noise penetrate the cabin. Like the Impreza, a 39-foot turning circle is wide for a typical small car.
The Protege handles with agility, and stiff suspension keeps the body from leaning a lot in turns. The steering is quick and well weighted. This car proved predictable and very secure at its handling limits and posted a commendable speed through our avoidance-maneuver test.
The 130-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provides respectable performance and averaged a pretty good overall fuel-economy level of 26 mpg using regular fuel. The four-speed automatic shifts smoothly; a five-speed manual is standard. Braking was very good overall.
INSIDE THE CAR
Inside, the Protege is solid and well put together. Anyone should be able to find a good view out, thanks to the low dash and windowsills, and to the multi-adjustable driver seat. The firm front seats offer good support. Rear seating is fine for two people, but toe space is tight; and the center position is very cramped for an adult. With smaller door openings, low seats, and tall door sills, access isn't as easy as in the Corolla.
