The Lancer is a new design that doesn't measure up to its competitors. It is the slowest of the group in acceleration. Handling is clumsy and the ride is not well controlled. Spacious accommodations are undermined by uncomfortable seats and a noisy cabin.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The ride feels compliant at first, but quickly becomes unsettled on rough pavement. Wind rush, road hiss, and a busy engine hum permeate the cabin.
The Lancer corners reluctantly, with pronounced body roll. The steering feels light and lacks feedback. A tight turning circle helps parking maneuvers, though. The Lancer proved a bit sloppy, though safe, when pushed to its cornering limits. It managed a good speed on our avoidance-maneuver course, but with its uncommunicative steering and tendency to plow early on, it never inspired much confidence.
The 120-hp, 2.0-liter Four accelerates just adequately. Expect 26 mpg in mixed driving on regular fuel. The four-speed automatic shifts smoothly. A five-speed manual is standard on other trim lines. Braking performance was very good overall.
INSIDE THE CAR
Panel fit is good, though some pieces appear mismatched. The driving position and view out are both good. However, the front seats have a hard cushion and a lumpy back that lacks side support. The rear bench is low, and passengers must sit very upright. There's plenty of room for two adults but not three. Access is easy, front or rear.
