On March 3, Syrian President Bashar Assad made the first official visit to Lebanon by a Syrian head of state in over half a century (and the first visit of any kind in 27 years), in an apparent bid to undercut growing opposition to Syrian hegemony in the country ahead of the March 27-28 Arab League summit in the Lebanese capital (for which he made a second visit) and manage divisions within the Lebanese regime.
