Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - Burundi's new transitional government plans to raise the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 6% during its three-year mandate so as to attain the level that prevailed before the 1993 socio-political crisis, official sources revealed in Bujumbura.
This is one of the key economic objectives to be publicly announced by the transitional government, which was installed on 1 November 2001.
According to the official statistics, Burundi's GDP grew at an annual average of 3.2 % before the 1993 crisis after the assassination of President Melkior Ndadaye.
Following the civil war, GDP which stood at around 210 US dollars during the 1980-1990s, had gone down to 110 dollars in 2000.
