Moroni, Comoros (PANA) - Voters in the autonomous Comoran island of Anjouan on Sunday elected Col. Mohamed Bacar as their President after he won 71.41 percent of the votes.
Bacar scored a first round victory after collecting 45,809 votes out of 69,084 ballots cast.
Contacted by PANA, Loufti Adinane, who pulled out as a candidate when the campaign was in full swing, said that Bacar was the favourite from the start.
The man who will head the rebellious island for five years will be 40 on 5 May. Father of four children, he was the youngest of all presidential aspirants from Anjouan.
On 9 August 2001, Bacar was among a group of majors who seized power in Anjouan in a coup d'etat against Col. Saed Abeid. A few weeks later, he stepped down as Anjouan gendarmerie commander to become Anjouan's undisputed leader.
