The Corvette is the quickest car we've tested. Powered by a strong 350-hp, 5.7-liter V8 engine, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.8 seconds, almost a second and a half faster than the next quickest, the Porsche Boxster. The Corvette is also relatively roomy for a sports car, and is one of the few that can accommodate tall people as well as a pair of golf bags in the trunk. Handling is nimble and secure, braking is excellent, and the ride is tolerable. On the down side, the interior fittings don't have a quality look or feel; and the top is a nuisance to operate.
THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
The Corvette doesn't feel as nimble as the Boxster, but its responsive, well-weighted steering and tenacious tire grip allow it to corner with confidence and agility. On our handling course, cornering was aided by predictable throttle response and an effective, unobtrusive electronic-stability-control system. The Corvette threaded our double-lane-change avoidance maneuver course quickly and securely.
The ride is stiff but not punishing. The suspension has three electronic adjustments that give increasing firmness. In addition to the distinctive exhaust burble of the V8, the cabin admits plenty of rumble from the big, wide tires.
The Corvette averaged 21 mpg in mixed driving. As with all the cars here, premium fuel is recommended. The optional six-speed manual transmission shifts crisply and has well-chosen ratios. A four-speed automatic is standard. Braking performance was exceptional overall.
INSIDE THE CABIN
Tall people will find a good driving position with adequate leg and head room. With the power seat elevated, five-footers can see out clearly to the front, but the view aft through the small glass window is limited. Multiple power adjustments help tailor the seat for good comfort. Hoisting yourself in and out of the low seats takes effort, however.
