WHAT'S NEW

Deck-treatment manufacturers are making improvements. Since we began our long-term testing of deck treatments six years ago, we have seen many products on the market reformulated and reintroduced. They claim to fade less and resist mildew better. We'd like to think that's a response to our earlier finding that many of the best-known products didn't hold up well to the elements.

The newest exterior paints are off to a less-than-stellar start. The four brands we've rolled into the test program are a notch lower in durability than the others.
