* Graco SnugRide car seat/infant carrier When used with base as safety seat in vehicle, carrier could detach from base in crash, subjecting child to serious injury.

Products: 918,930 safety seats made 8/31/99 to 2/28/02, including the following models (model number may be preceded by the letter "A"): 7493G9, 7493RS, 7497HL, 7497SY, 7499LK, 7499N2, 841101, 841102, 841103, 841203, 8412T02, 8457D5, 8457DVB, 8457F3, 8457GP, 8457IND, 8457MA, 8457MV, 8457RG, 8457TMJ, 8457TMP, 8457YL, 8458A5, 8458AE, 8458B7, 8458D8, 8458FKB, 8458HE, 8458HH, 8458KY, 8458N5, 8459VL, 8460LV, 8462HAV, 8462JAM, 8471UVB, 8472BLW, 8472CYP, 8472GMP, 8472MAD, 8472YL, 8473BRN, 8474HAB, 8474MEL, 8476VIN, 8477HAV, 8477JAM, 8477NGS, and 8478SAR. Model name and number, as well as date of manufacture, appear on label on seat or base. Hazard exists because of missing hardware (metal hooks and U-shaped bars) used to securely attach seat to base. Base was also sold separately through Graco Customer Service. If base was purchased that way, model number may not be evident, and you will need to contact the company to determine whether device is subject to recall. Model 8458 was among the seats we tested for our 7/01 report. However, none of the samples we tested were missing any hardware. The seat portion of the unit can still be safely used as an infant carrier or safety seat when strapped to vehicle without the base, according to Graco.

What to do: Call Graco at 800-345-4109 for free replacement seat or base. Company will also help consumers identify suspect models.

* Lifetime and Escalade Sports portable basketball hoops

Protruding bolts on pole can cause serious injury.

Products: 1.7 million Lifetime and 16,000 Escalade Sports hoops sold at sporting-goods, department, and toy stores including Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target, and Toys "R" Us for $80 to $500. Lifetime hoops were sold 1/94 to 7/00; Escalade Sports hoops, 3/94 to 12/01. All Lifetime portable basketball system models except for Quick Court are subject to recall. Escalade Sports models included in recall are the Harvard; The Big Easy B3100, B3301, B3302, B3303, B3304, B3305, B3306, B3402, B3403, and B3500; Spalding; Apex B9995; Mini Court; and Alley Court. Hoops come unassembled with flat plastic base that must be weighted down with water or sand. Poles are black metal. Brand or model designations may appear on backboard, main pole, or plastic base.
