Baffling bottles.
Shop at CVS for glucosamine and chondroitin (they relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis in some people), as we did recently, and you may have a choice of three bottles, which can prove confusing in at least three ways.
Let's start with strength. Regular strength means that you take six pills per day; double strength means three per day; triple strength means two per day--all to achieve the same dosage of 1,500 mg of glucosamine and 1,200 mg of chondroitin. So far, that makes sense.
Now let's take the size of the bottles and the number of pills inside. Although the bottles are the same size, they hold a different number of pills: Regular has 150; double, 120; triple, 80. The doses per bottle are 25, 40, and 40.
Next, the price: Regular costs $21.99; double, $26.99; triple, $24.99.
Ready to stop studying the bottles in that CVS aisle and go to the cash register? We hope you've chosen the triple-strength pills. They cost 62 cents per dose, vs. 67 cents for double strength and 88 cents for regular strength.
