Abstract

The standards movement has become the major educational reform movement of recent years. It raises many questions with regard to its applicability to all students in all schools and its political base. The fact that standards are most frequently linked to standardized testing is one of the major elements of controversy. Many teachers and pre-service teacher candidates are questioning whether the use of common standards linked to standardized testing cause teaching that is not reflective of best practice.
