Abstract
Drawing on the perspectives of middle and high school youth, this article highlights the multiple meanings of respect within the context of the central classroom experience -- interactions between teachers and students. In conversation and in writing, students define respect as relational, they qualify respectful relationships as reciprocal, and they argue for a radial compass in teacher/student relationships.
