Roy Chatham lives with his 25-year-old son Jason in southwestern Wilkes County, North Carolina. He is a newspaper carrier for the Winston-Salem Journal, and was at work in the early morning of March 8th when two men knocked on the door of the Chatham's mobile home shortly before 4 a.m. When Jason answered, they told him that their car had broken down, and asked if they could make a phone call and borrow a flashlight. Since Jason knew one of the men, he let them in.
Once inside, they grabbed young Chatham, placed him in a headlock at knifepoint, and bound his hands with an electrical cord from a hair trimmer. They then forced him to lie on a couch, unaware that a .32-caliber handgun was stashed there. As the two intruders began searching the home for money and other valuables, Jason, whose hands were bound in front, was able to retrieve the gun. ...
