Orem, Utah, resident Gary Mendenhall, 46, has worked for Utah Power & Light Company for some 23 years. On March 27th, he was inspecting a power pole in an empty field when he noticed a $20 bill on the ground, then another, and yet another, until he eventually found so many bills of varying denominations that he could not hold them all. Since nobody was around, he could easily have kept the cash. Instead, he immediately called the police.
Authorities declined to reveal the total amount, since the figure would factor in confirming the veracity of anyone claiming the money. But Orem Police Lieutenant Doug Edwards told Salt Lake City's Deseret News for March 29th, "If you were all alone and happened to find this amount of money scattered all over the ground in a deserted field, you'd immediately be looking around to spot the 'Candid Camera' crew."
