It is a coincidence that the first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's 1987 fairy-tale-derived musical "Into the Woods" has arrived in New York, at the Broadhurst, at this particular moment, but the timing could not have been better. Worn out by the events of the past eight months and by all the mayoral exhortations to get back to normal (and things are back to normal: the souvenir shops in Times Square are already selling postcards of the World Trade Center on fire and collapsing), New Yorkers may find "Into the Woods" to be a balm and a comfort right now -- not because it sidesteps difficult matters but because it doesn't.
