Paris, France (PANA) - The Catholic Church in France has expressed concern to the French Government over the conditions in which asylum seekers are made to live in the country.
In a document, "Asylum in France: State of Emergency," the French Catholic hierarchy said that the management system for refugees was ill adapted and inefficient.
They deplored long delays in the processing of applications, as well as overcrowding in accommodation facilities.
"The processing time at the French Board for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless People (OFPRA) lasts for months and even years for nationals of certain countries," said the bishops who signed the document, adding that a refugee cannot wait for two to three years without employment.
In that regard, the church's position is similar to that of some 100 parliamentarians who wrote to French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin in January to ask the government to restore the asylum seekers' right to employment.
