The endemic Clanwilliam cedar tree, which is categorised as endangered on the Red Data List, was dealt another body blow this week when a fire raged in the Cedarberg mountains. Three hundred hectares of pine plantation and 500 hectares of fynbos as well as 200 hectares of cedar plantation were destroyed in the fire which raged from Sunday to Tuesday. Police were investigating the possibility that the fire was deliberately started.
