SEOUL, May 1 Asia Pulse - Exports rose 9.7 per cent to US$13.3 billion in April from a year earlier, marking the first time in 14 months that the country's exports soared, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said Wednesday.
Exports continued a downward trend since March last year when exports marked a 2.1 per cent decline.
Imports also rose 12.1 per cent to US$12.5 billion year-on-year in April, marking the first increase since last March when imports dropped 8.9 per cent.
Trade surplus reached US$724 million in April, down from US$1.4 billion in March.
Combined exports during the first four months this year slightly exceeded US$49 billion, down 6.1 per cent from a year earlier and imports for the January-April period declined to US$46.2 billion, down 6.2 per cent from the same period last year.
Ministry officials predict that exports will likely post two-digit growth rates beginning July, noting that arrivals of letters of credit rose 4.3 per cent between April 1 and April 20.
