MANILA, May 1 Asia Pulse - The national government would prefer a "liberalized" policy over "open skies" for the country's air transport system, to protect the local airline industry from the adverse effects of free trade.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said that a liberalized Philippine air policy was also more consistent with her administration's thrust to promote the country's competitiveness as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
"It's not so much open skies as it is liberalization, and not so much free trade but liberalized trade. And we should not look like we are throwing away the airlines," Arroyo said.
Arroyo was referring to the local airline industry players, particularly struggling flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL).
Officials of PAL have vigorously blocked the open skies policy being pushed by previous administrations, saying that they have failed to protect the airline against unfair competition from foreign carriers.
Advocates of the open skies have been espousing increased airline seats and flight frequences for foreign carriers to attract more tourists to the country.
