CANBERRA, May 1 Asia Pulse - International environmental group Greenpeace has called on the Australian government to raise the issue of whaling in its official trade talks with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Despite adamant opposition from all over the world, Japan kills hundreds of minke whales each year for what it describes as "scientific research", and supports the resumption of full-scale commercial whaling.
A handful of Greenpeace anti-whaling protesters confronted visiting Mr Koizumi as he arrived at Parliament House today.
The group, waving anti-whaling placards with messages such as Japan, the World is Watching, used Mr Koizumi's official visit to Canberra to highlight the plight of the world's whales.
"Greenpeace today is calling on the Australian government to raise the issue of whaling, vote buying and scientific whaling with Prime Minister Koizumi on his official visit to Australia," campaigner Vanessa Atkinson said.
