KwaZulu-Natal premier Lionel Mtshali was given permission on Friday to testify in support of a court application to force government to provide the anti-Aids drug nevirapine to HIV-positive pregnant women without delay. The Pretoria High Court ruled he should be allowed to participate in the proceedings after the State objected. The application was lodged by the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) following its successful lawsuit in December compelling the government to make nevirapine available to HIV-positive pregnant women. The government's response to the December ruling was to declare its intention to seek leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the judgment. An application by the State to this effect is to be heard on Friday in conjunction with the new action brought by TAC.
