President Thabo Mbeki arrived at the Australian East Coast resort of Coolum on Friday to join other Commonwealth leaders for a heads of government meeting in which Zimbabwe is expected to dominate. He arrived at the local airport accompanied by first lady Zanele Mbeki at 2.45pm (6.45am South African Time). The three-day meeting, commonly referred to as CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting), begins on Saturday. Mbeki, along with Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo, is opposed to Canada, Britain and Australia's push for Zimbabwe to be suspended from the 54-member Commonwealth. Mbeki -- as host of the 1999 CHOGM in Durban -- is also the outgoing chairman of the Commonwealth. The position was created in 1999 with the aim of giving the Commonwealth a higher profile on the international stage, according to Richard Bourne of the Commonwealth Policy Studies Unit (CPSU).
