TOWNSVILLE, May 1 Asia Pulse - Cairns company Flightship Ground Effect has developed a commercially registered flying boat, which combines the speed of planes and the economy of ships.
The vessel can travel up to 170kph at about two metres above sea level, Flightship managing director John Leslie said.
The company came up with the idea after seeing a dire need internationally for high-speed transport to move people and patrol coastlines, he said.
"But it's got to be a lot cheaper than an aeroplane and a lot faster than a boat," Mr Leslie said.
"The operating cost of this is half that of a similar-sized aeroplane and the speed is typically four or five times faster than a boat."
An eight-seater flightship would cost $1.5 million, while a similar-sized float plane would cost about $3.2 million, Mr Leslie said.
