Northern Province teenager Tshepo Matloha did not have any injuries consistent with an allegation that he had been hit hard in the face with a rifle butt several times, a forensic pathologist told the Pretoria High Court on Friday. On Thursday, State witness Louis Strydom testified that Riaan Botha, one of the five accused on charges including Matloha's murder, hit the 19-year-old in the face with the butt of his .22 rifle six or seven times. Dr Bhanwarlal Bhootra, who conducted the post mortem, on Friday testified that one could expect lacerations on the cheeks and lower jaws due to such actions. No bruises or injuries were found on the soft tissue of the cheeks or lower jaws, and the nasal bone was not fractured either, Bhootra said. The only injuries to the face was on the forehead. Bruises were found on the top of the head and on the left temple as well. The joint between two scalp bones were fractured, as were a number of ribs. Muscles all over the rib area were bruised, Bhootra said. According to him, the cause of death was "blunt force trauma" to the head and chest.
