THE UNDERSTANDABLE desire of business to have issue of Commonwealth power over corporations clarified by the states referring such power to Canberra has been distracted and complicated by the former minister Mr Reith's bid for a unitary system of industrial relations. States of different political complexions are apprehensive that the accrual of power at a federal level may have the unintended consequence of assisting demolition of state-based labour law. The onus will fall on the Commonwealth to persuade the states that the complexities of business law can be rectified without intruding on the more controversial territory of industrial relations.
