   Poetry is tremendously popular now. 
   That may be an astounding fact to many 
   people, particularly as poetry in our 
   culture has a negative image. After all, 
   for many years we were subjected to the 
   indignity of having to memorise long 
   narrative poems for school recitals. The 
   very word "Shakespeare" could suggest 
   boredom and having to virtually 
   translate his poetry into modern, plain 
   English. Poets are often depicted as 
   being effete, out of touch with reality, 
   concerned with images of roses and 
   swans, using an artificial language. But
