SIR: Pseudo-environmentalism has more to answer for in the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers than a simple criticism of the materials used in its construction would imply (Neil McDonald, November 2001). The steel columns supporting the Twin Towers were designed to resist fire for at least four hours. Emergency plans called for this four hours to be used to evacuate the buildings. The period prior to collapse was one hour forty-five minutes for the first Tower struck and fifty-six minutes for the second. Why so short?
The Trade Tower design specified the use of asbestos insulation, and this was used on all columns up to the 64th floor. Then in 1971, while the World Trade Center was still under construction, New York City banned the use of asbestos. A substitute was used from that point on.
