Considering the vast amount of organ literature based on hymn tunes, it may seem surprising that the genre of theme and variation finds only modest representation. All the more welcome, then, that Matthew Corl has chosen such a format for his latest publication in the St. Cecilia Series, offering a set of short yet solid variations on the venerable hymn tune, Grafenberg.
Corl's work consists of six movements, each giving a different disposition to the cantus through the creative use of forms, styles and keys. The four-part chorale is presented first sans pedal in Movement I; Movement II is a sprightly voluntary in ABA form, which serves as the framework for an embellished version of the hymn tune in its midsection. Movement III unfolds as a graceful pastorale in 6/8 time, presenting the melody twice in its entirety, adding gravity through use of an ostinato-like pedal line.
